Royal Ascot

Royal Ascot is the shining jewel in the Ascot Racecourse crown. Held in June over a period of five days, the race dates back to 1711 and has been run ever since. Traditionally the Royal Procession arrives at 2pm on the dot which is followed by communal singing around the Bandstand.

The highlights of the week include the Gold Cup held on Ladies’ Day and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes on the Saturday and prize money for the week exceeds the £6.5 million mark.

Ladies’ Day

Royal Ascot Ladies’ Day is traditionally held on the third day of Royal Ascot. Royal Ascot’s most glamorous day is awash with colour, style and ladies all vying with each other to be named ‘Best Dressed Lady’.

Some ladies take it incredibly seriously and spend months preparing for the occasion. Ladies’ Day has been known to actually take the focus away from the racing and on to what the ladies are wearing!

Dress Code

As you would expect, the Royal Ascot dress code is extremely strict compared to any other race meeting. It is the one fixture that demands people wear something befitting a royal audience and the rules are most definitely enforced.

For example, those using the Royal Enclosure Ladies can only wear a day dress with a hat with additional rules for the length and style, and they must keep shoulders and midriffs covered. Gentlemen must wear morning coats and top hats. A very precise guide to the other enclosures can be found here:  https://www.ascot.co.uk/Royal-Ascot

History

Ascot’s Royal history goes back to 1711 when Queen Anne instigated the first ever meeting. Her Majesty’s Plate was the inaugural event which was worth 100 guineas to the winner.

Today’s most prestigious events are the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the King George VI races run in July.
