You’ll also lose if, when you stick or stand, the dealer either beats your total (as close to 21 as possible), or if they manage to score 21 outright.  The dealer can go bust too, however, which means there are multiple outcomes to what appears to be an otherwise simple game.

Here is a small table of odds which shows you how likely it is you will go bust on drawing an additional card:

Therefore, as you can see, your chance of going bust obviously goes up with the increasing value of your hand.  This is why it makes sense to be as cautious as possible the more you play.

When do you choose to stick or stand?  Are aces high or low?  Are other side bets in play?  These are all things to consider.

Blackjack Odds of Winning

Anyone looking to get into the game will obviously want to know more about blackjack odds of winning if they stand any chance of taking any serious money away.

Seasoned players will generally advise sticking or standing if you are lucky enough to score a total of 19 or 20 – but you will otherwise be considered safe to hit or twist if you score a hand of 12 or 13.

From then on upwards, the odds will start get to get stacked against you.

  • Three of a Kind (draw three identical numbers in different suits): 30:1
  • Perfect Pairs (match suits on your first two draws): 25:1
  • Coloured Pairs (match colours on your first two draws): 15:1
  • Straights (draw three in a row, i.e. 3-4-5): 10:1
  • Mixed Pairs (match ranks on your first two draws): 5:1
  • Flushes (match three suited cards): 5:1
