You know when a brand has become main stream because you start to see their adverts on the TV. You know they’ve hit the big time when you see celebrities of the calibre of Mel B, the former Spice Girl staring in them.
Mel B Advert
Probably the most famous of the adverts created by the Cassava operated site. The ad came with the tagline “Jackpots So Big It’s Scary”. With a line like that you can see why ‘Scary Spice’ was chosen to star in the ad or maybe it was the other way round, the status Mel B perhaps dictating the messaging around the advertising.
A giant Mel B stomping round the streets of London is a scary site indeed, especially when she grabs a tablet and perks her backside on some of London’s most iconic buildings.
The site first appeared on TV in January 2014 but in the digital world that we live in, gone are just the days when an advert that was featured on TV loses it’s appeal. Given the popularity of You Tube the ad is still out there 4 years on and given the search volume on Google and You Tube, it’s still working wonders for the brand.
In fact it’s been viewed over 1.3m times on You Tube which is phenomenal.
There was two shortened versions of the ad shown on main stream TV along the same theme:
Jonny Vegas Advert
Probably not as well know is the advert featuring the British Comic and star of the TV Series Benidorm, Jonny Vegas. This ad takes more of a comical stance and to be honest with you, is more in keeping with the theme of online bingo as a whole.
The Jonny Vegas ad also was more bonus led and one of the things that stands out from the Mel B ad, is that the Costa Bingo brand doesn’t really stand out as much as it should do.
I am not an advertising expert of course but having been involved in Boomtown Bingo for a number of years now, I get a gut feeling for what makes a bingo site successful and what doesn’t.
You can of course judge for yourself as we’ve included the Jonny Vegas Ad for you to take a look at.
The Jonny Vegas ad was first showed on TV in June 2016 which is two years after the Mel B adverts.
Other Costa Bingo Ads
Costa haven’t just used celebrities to push their brand. They’ve also run some fun cartoon led ad.
However it’s unlikely that we will see adverts of this nature again. The Advertising Standards Agency have taken a hard stance by issuing new guidelines in November 2017. This saw them banning gambling companies from using words like ‘free’ to promote their products as in most instances, there is a requirement to make a deposit of some sort to trigger a bonus.
In addition they also banned the use of imagery that may appeal to under 18’s in the use of all promotional materials. So don’t expect to see any cartoon characters moving forward which have historically been so prevalent in the online bingo and online slots world.
Other Bingo Brands On TV
Having a TV advert on main stream TV is probably reserved for the bingo elite. The likes of Sun Bingo, Gala, Jackpotjoy and Tombola are just some of the other names to run adverts with celebrity endorsements.
