York Races’ Illustrious history goes all the way back to Roman times. It is believed that racing on the current site started in around 1730-31 but no one is 100% sure.

Although York Racecourse is famous for its racing, perhaps its ultimate memorable finish was on April 19th 1739, when notorious highwayman Dick Turpin was hanged on the Knavesmire.

As well as notorious criminals, York has also been visited by royalty and by Pope John Paul II when he said an open-air mass in 1982.
